G9 temps

  • My G9 is hot... like 115F (47C) on the outside of the case. That's a lot of heat for a 6w CPU (N150).

Anyone else having this problem? Just unboxed it Friday and put 2x Kingston 1TB NVMes in it. Stock Ubuntu OS, just patched. Haven't even created a user.. Haven't formatted the NVMes or created a pool or anything.

  • this is probably the nvme disks getting hot and not the cpu.

do the nvmes have a heatsink?

  • @glennwil72

As I also think that the SSD could cause this temperature, could you install the trial version of this software to confirm this supposition ?

  • Hi. Temperature is a big problem with the G9. I tried many different options, but I now have it running at much lower temperatures. In the BIOS you will find the fan settings #1 & #2, which I take to be for the CPU and maybe #2 for the two little fans on the side of the drive bay. I changed all the fan settings to kick in at 30C, so the highest fan setting kicks in almost straight away. This keeps all the tempertures of the 4 SSDs at +/- 45C and the CPU at 40C. This is with Truenas Scale 25.04 running and 4 Apps all running, Plex, Paperless-ngx, Syncthing and Homebox. Obviously, the G9 is no longer inaudible, it now makes a bit of fan noise, but it's not too loud, and it has solved the heat problem for me.

  • I forgot to mention that I'm running 4 x 1TB Crucial P310 SSDs. They are PCIe Gen4.

  • There is an interesting YouTube video about the heat issues of the G9 by Jeff Geerling. It's titled "I fixed the perfect Mini NAS!" He posted it yesterday 27/04/2025. I've also taken mine apart a few times, trying to find different solutions to address the heat issue, but in the end, increasing the fan speed (and the noise a bit), has proven to work fine.

  • I would like to know from GMKTec whether they could design a better case for the G9 with much better cooling for the SSD bay. If they could upgrade the G9 with better cooling, I would be happy to purchase a new case from them to solve the heat issue. Hopefully, someone from GMKTec will respond.
