G9 nuc truenas scale

  • I wonder if anybody tried to run truenas on the g9 nuc, because i ordered one and now i am looking for os solution. Definatly not gonna use either ubuntu or win.

  • I'm  about to put TrueNas Scale 24.10 on mine. I installed two Kingston NV2 1TB on Friday and left it running the stock Ubuntu over the weekend. (Didn't format the NVMEs or install anything because I knew I was going to blow it away. When I went to check it today, it's running 115F (47C) on the top left side of the case (looking from the front).   It's unconfortable to touch... amazing how a 6W processor can't be kept cool. Maybe it's the wifi card??  There is (very low) fan noise, so it's not like the fan wasn't hooked up.

  • @squeech I tried TrueNAS 24.10 and the installer has issues (failed to find partition 2 on mmcblk0).  https://forums.truenas.com/t/installation-failed-on-emmc-odroid-h4/15317

This is not specific to the G9, but looks like anything with the embedded MMC type storage.

Start with 24.04 (Dragonfish) and then upgrade.

  • I just got TrueNAS on mine, but I'm getting a warning about my SSDs not having unique serial numbers (saying its probably caused by cabling issue).
I tried googling about it and it seems a common issue with port splitters, and causes issues for ZFS filesystem that TrueNAS uses.

I'll maybe try few more things but if I can't find an answer over the weekend I'll probably opt to go with Open Media Vault instead.

edit: I realised that this warning was not about the m.2 SSDs I had put into the system. It is about partitions that were created onto them eMMC when installing TrueNAS.
Well, hopefully this here helps someone who's getting confused by the warning. lol

  • I had this duplicate SN # problem on a terra-master D9 Hybrid.  Here's the forum page for fixing it.  I don't know if it will work for the G9. https://forum.terra-master.com/en/viewtopic.php?p=39165#p39165

  • I managed to install Truenas Scale 24.04 on the 64gb eMMC on my G9, but it took a while to figure out how to do it. I'm happy to assist you to accomplish this if you still need help. I made a Gparted boot thumb drive, booted with that, deleted all the partitions on the eMMC storage, then created a new partition, but put a 0 for space before the patition (this was important for some reason). I then shut the system down and rebooted with the Truenas Scale bootable installation USB. Although the above seems simple, it took me many tries. I initially tried with HexOS, which runs on top of Truenas, but I couldn't get it to install on the eMMC memory. I did manage to install HexOS on an external USB drive, which allowed me to use the 4 SSD bays for a storage array (RAID5), but ideally I wanted it installed on the eMMC memory, so I just kept trying until I found the solution I described above.
